Michelle: Owner/Operator
I began my career in animal care over 10 years ago. I began by volunteering at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay in the Spay and Neuter Clinic. I also worked as an adoption assistant in the shelter and in the Moblile Adoption Center. I have worked at numerous fundraisers including the Bark in the Park, Paws for the Cure and Tuxes in Tails. Since then, I have organized several benefits for The Humane Society through my company and raised over $1,000 during one event.
I first became an animal care technician for a local petstore. I managed a kennel with an average of 50 puppies and kittens. I also took care of several large parrots, dozens of small birds and reptiles, many ferrets, numerous rabbits and what seemed like hundreds of rodents. There was also the occasional chinchilla or hedgehog, not to mention the tarantulas and scorpions. I maintained thousands of gallons of fish tanks.
I left there to pursue an opportunity to work in a kennel at an animal hospital. I quickly worked my way up and became a veterinary assistant. I assisted in exams and learned basic laboratory techniques. I helped induce anethesia and recovered animals from surgery.
I went back to school and enrolled in pre-veterinary. I soon decided that I would become a veterinary technician. I was hired at an animal hospital that specialized in avians and exotics. I received direct, hands on training with creatures ranging from a great horned owl to a 40 pound tortoise. It was exciting to never know what animal I was about to encounter on the other side of the exam room door.
Unfortunately, most animal hospitals cannot provide their employees with benefits. So, I decided to start my own business where I could still work with the animals that I love. I continue to volunteer at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. I was a sponsor for the 2009 Bark in the Ball Park at Steinbrenner Field. I am also an "Advocat" for Big Cat Rescue.
